Find the right pillow
The right pillow is the first prerequisite for restful sleep. At SAMINA, we always say that healthy sleep starts at the head. To prevent tension, pain and other sleep-disrupting factors, the pillow must fulfil certain health criteria. In this article, we explain how to find the right pillow for you.
The right positioning
As different as sleeping habits are, so different can be the choice of pillow. The most important function of the pillow is to provide optimum support of the cervical spine so that it can maintain its natural S-shape. Basically, the pillow should provide support for the head and prevent the cervical spine from bending. A permanently incorrect positioning of the head can lead to headaches, neck pain and tension in the shoulder area. The neck in particular, as the most sensitive part of the cervical spine, needs an anatomically shaped support surface. After all, it bears the weight of the head.
The right firmness
The hardness of the pillow should also be considered. If it is too hard, it cannot adapt optimally to the individual shape of the sleeper's head. If it is too soft, it lacks the necessary support function to keep the spine in its natural shape. This can lead to impaired nerve and blood vessel function. We can quickly find out what is too hard or too soft in a joint consultation. Alternatively, you can find an explanation of how to properly test a pillow at home in our online shop.
Dermatology and bed climate
Sleep experts recommend organic virgin sheep's wool as bedding because it can absorb 30% of its own weight in moisture. Not only the duvet, but also the pillow should be filled with natural virgin sheep's wool, as the neck in particular can become problematic for people who perspire heavily. Muscle pain, so-called myalgia, and pre-existing muscle tension, myogelosis, can be exacerbated by sweating attacks.
Sustainability and durability
Every SAMINA cushion is the result of careful craftsmanship, high-quality materials and decades of research. This is the only way we can guarantee that the lifespan of our products is significantly longer than that of other manufacturers and that the environment is not harmed in any way. Nothing slips or snuggles on SAMINA cushions and even after years, often even after a whole decade, the cushion still has exactly the properties that characterise a new cushion. We like to say: At SAMINA you buy your last pillow. And we mean it.
The right pillow for every sleeping position
Depending on your sleeping habits and preferred side, back or stomach position, we offer a selection of pillows with different shapes, fillings and functions. In this way, we ensure that the cervical spine is properly positioned and supported depending on your sleeping habits. Find the right pillow for your sleeping position here:
Side sleeper
Half of people are side sleepers. When sleeping on your side, it is important that the pillow fills the shoulder-neck triangle and that the head is positioned stably. Bending or overstretching the cervical spine should be avoided.
Side sleeper pillowsBack sleeper
When sleeping in the supine position, the pillow should fill the neck cavity, the area between the back of the head and shoulders. This is the only way to ensure relief. The height is also relevant here. The pillow should not be too high.
Back sleeper pillowsStomach sleeper
If you sleep on your stomach, you need a very flat pillow. The sideways head position puts a lot of strain on the cervical vertebrae. A pillow that is too high would also unnecessarily bend the spine.
Stomach sleeper pillowsThe importance of the right pillow
Healthy sleep really does start at the head! When SAMINA customers say that their sleep system has changed, this is often due either to a general change in lifestyle (e.g. too little exercise, too much sitting, weight gain and much more) or to the wrong pillow. Even pain in the lower back or other parts of the musculoskeletal system, such as the hips, is often directly related to the pillow. We therefore recommend taking particular care when choosing a pillow. And if your lifestyle changes drastically, it may be advisable to adjust the pillow accordingly. After all, you don't wear the same shoes to the gym as you do to the office.
